Goal of the game goes to Jiri Hudler, courtesy of some slick passing via Filppula and Zetterberg:

Hudler scored two goals for a season total of eleven, while his linemates Hank and Fil clocked three points each. First and third stars went to Hudler and Fil, respectively. Safe to say that line was clickin' last night. Those were the only multipoint games for the Wings, and despite four goals against, only two skaters finished with a negative plus-minus.

We're going to go ahead and predict that the new divisional format for next year will intensify the Wings-Stars rivalry until it becomes the second most-competitive match-up for the Wings (behind Chicago, ahead of Nashville).

Also, the RWH blogging mainframe is going in for maintenance later tonight, but we're hoping to have her back before Saturday night's tilt against the Leafs.

Goal of the game goes to Miller for letting Lidstrom shoot it in off his stick. However, the full game highlights aren't yet available on the Wings website, so we're going to have to settle for watching this epic Kronwalling of Kesler over and over again.

No fines, no suspension according to the Shanahammer. Would have been better in a win, but it's a kind moral victory in itself.

Just a brief shout-out of good will and well wishes for injured grinders Jan Mursak, Patrick Eaves, and Chris Connor. It's always tough to see guys on the shelf, but even more so when it's these guys, the players that compete so hard the opportunity to play with the Winged Wheel on their chest.

Get well soon, boys. It's a joy to watch you play.

Goal of the Game vs. LA, 12/17 - Snowman Bracket Edition

8 goals. A snowman. Nice.

The Kings came to town with dismal offensive output, but helmed by a disciplinarian coach with a reputation for quick turnarounds. The Wings stepped on their necks, in the most finesse-infused sense of the phrase.

Since they were so many candidates for goal of the game, we decided to bracket them out and let the Wings' scorers duke it out playoff style. We figured we would line the goals up chronologically, rather than seed them somehow or try to re-randomize their occurrence. So here we go:

Quarterfinals

Goal #1 by Miller vs. goal #2 by Emmerton.
We're going with Miller on this one based on the fact that he battled hard to gain position in the crease. His goal was dirtier, and we are huge fans of dirty. Miller moves on to round two.

Goal #3 by Kronwall vs. goal #4 by Emmerton
Preference goes to Kronner on this one because, jeez, sometimes you just have to give a blueliner some props when he steps into a shot like that. Just a ripper, right in off the crossbar. Emmerton would have had to execute some sick deke and outskill Kronner to move on to round two, but he didn't need to for his second of the game. Nevertheless, young Cory took second star for the game.

Goal #5 by Zetterberg vs. goal #6 by Datsyuk
Holy cow, tough call. The strength of Zetterberg to drive that deep and wide and still find the near top shelf on the backhand was ridiculous. But we have seen that type of goal before. The Datsyuk goal, on the other, that was the first time we seen that particular move, and it was executed with virtuoso precision. Absolute craftsmanship by Pav.

Goal #7 by Miller vs. goal #8 by Stuart
Consider us predictable, but we're going with the defenseman again. Miller did a great job of drifting in as the third forward and finding the back of the net, no doubt. But Stuart stepped up and hammered a shot through the net front screens and past the goalie. Advantage Stu.

Semifinals

Goal #1 by Miller vs. goal #3 by Kronwall
Kronwall. As much effort as Miller put in, it's just not as impressive as the power Kronner put into that slapper. Kronwall on to the final.

Goal #6 by Datsyuk vs. goal #8 by Stuart
As we mentioned earlier, the only way to beat an authoritative blast from the point is with a display of overwhelming skill, which is exactly what we have here with Datsyuk's goal.

Finals
Goal #3 by Kronwall vs. goal #6 by Datsyuk
In what may come a surprise, we're going with Kronwall in the final analysis. His shot was an absolute laser, and it was the game-winner.

Goal of the Game vs. Nashville, 12/15

Well, the game against the Predators on Thursday went much they way we expected. Wings fans packed the rink in this road game, and the team responded with a dominating effort most aptly demonstrated by a 40-21 shots on goal advantage.

However, the dominating tone of the game was short by about five minutes. It's not like this is news to anyone, but if you're up a goal with five minutes to play and you take a minor penalty, chances are you're going looking at a locked-up score in the very near future. And that having happened, you're in position to lose two points on a fluke bounce, which is exactly what happened.

Anyway...

Goal of the game goes to Lidstrom. Between the clank off the post, the distance of the shot, and the fact that this is Nick Lidstrom we're talking about, the honors go to him. If you would prefer that Hank's goal get the recognition, we totally understand. And Homer's goal was a classic of his oeuvre.

Lidstrom took home the game's third star as well. His partner on the blue line Ian White cranked a team-high six SOG, while the pairing of Kronwall and Stuart struggled to a well-documented -3 apiece.

Occupy: Bridgestone Arena

In case you haven't seen it on Puck Daddy, some senior league player took a dump in an opponent's glove following an on-ice dust-up, as you can see by the actual player page.

I actually played in that league in 2004, which was coincidentally that last season I got into a real deal, gloves-off fight. There is no doubt in my mind this incident actually happened.

If/When you watch the NHL Skills Competition in a couple months, and Pierre works up a good santorum over a guy hitting four stationary targets, remember Pav's horse shot against the Pens. And then turn the channel.

Pav took the first star, second to Howard, third to Cleary. Franzen with the game-winner. Nice effort even if we didn't exactly start on time.

Handicapping this one, we'd give the edge to Michigan-native Abdelkader and minor Motown folk hero Helm, followed by chick magnet Filppula and MSU product Miller. Babcock and Holland will run third, first among journalists, while newbies Kindl and Emmerton will suffer from their relative lack of exposure around the D.

Griffins Dust-Ups Versus Chicago from Saturday Night

As Elton John has long seranaded ice arena crowds, "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", or at least it was this past Saturday, December 3, as the Griffins hosted the Chicago Wolves.

First up, the unlikely combatant Tomas Tatar gets into just his second AHL scrap:

Clearly that's not Tatar's role, and he demonstrated that his skill set in the realm of fisticuffs is underdeveloped. The scrap would set up the night's second tilt, featuring Mitch Callahan. This bout has a good long lead-in wherein the lines are changed and the pugilism is negotiated at the face-off:

Callahan still hasn't really figured out how to fight against grown-ass men, but he certainly looks the part; collected and willing, if not always completely able.

Also, this is the first time we've seen the Griffins wear those particular tri-color jerseys, and they looked darn sharp in those threads.

It's 25 minutes but well worth the time to view. Some of you participated in this documentary and I thought you may be interested in how it turned out. I think it's fabulous. They did a great job of showing training camp and it's importance to the players and the DRW organization. I am very proud of you all, there is no doubt. The Wings really did a nice job of breaking down Tampa's 1-3-1 system the other, and by the time the Wings established their presence in the offensive zone, they were running cuts to the slot with routine precision. Steve Yzerman may wear a bolt on his lapel these days, but we all know that he is the emotional property of Wings fans. So when he brings his South Florida squad into the Joe on Wednesday night, expect him to be met with thunderous and deserving applause. If anyone in attendance fails to show The Captain the respect he deserves, please shriek "SOUTH DETROIT!!!" directly into their ear canal at any given opportunity.

Amadio, Exelby and Callahan Pugilism Review

The Grand Rapids Griffins are currently tied for second in fighting majors in the AHL with 25 infractions in nineteen games played. Greg Amadio leads the team with eight majors, a figure which ties him for the AHL lead with three others. Garnet Exelby and Mitch Callahan are tied for second on the Griffins with four fights apiece.

Amadio has fought more recently, but this is the most recent fight (Nov. 18) for which there is video available. Not his best work, but this is a workmanlike bout for the Griffins tough guy:

From the same game, here is Exelby's most recent effective scrap, in retaliation for a slash:

Last but not least, we must speak of young Mitch Callahan. His most recent fight was against the Hamilton Bulldogs, and it was a month in the making, apparently. The background is this; on October 18, Callahan delivered a questionable hit to Bulldogs d-man Joe Stejskal, who was knocked unconscious and stretchered off the ice. Here is the hit:

Now, at the end of that clip, you can see Dogs enforcer Jack Fitzgerald making a forceful point of some kind. These dudes have long memories, as we all know. So the next Hamilton/GR game, you would rightly expect fireworks. However, for that tilt of November 11, Callahan was absent from the line-up. So, November 23 became retribution night. Here is the fight:

You can hear from the announcers that this fight was anticipated, with direct reference to the hit on Stejskal.

Tidbit: Brendan Smith is fourth on the Griffins with two fights.

Press Release: Injury Update for Patrick Eaves

Patrick Eaves wants to be a Wing. He came here on the cheap. He accepted a role. He followed orders. He signed another contract. Repeated the same. Never acted entitled to anything. Worked hard. Rewarded this past summer with a three-year deal. Saw his ice time diminish. Never bitched, not once. Practiced hard. Said the right things. Kept his head on straight.

Finally, tonight, he got in the line-up. Did what he always does. Played hard. Forechecked his ass off. Killed penalties (second among forwards in short-handed time on ice tonight).

Then, as a result of the role he plays and the orders he follows, Eaves took a point shot off the side of his head. The Wings have issued an update with respect to his condition after being stretchered off the ice. Bottom line so far: broken jaw, surgery possible, no timetable for his return.

The Joe faithful chanting Eaves' name was touching, but eerily somewhere in between the fiction of Fight Club's space monkeys chanting "His name is Robert Paulson" and the fact of Mike Utley wheeled off the field paralyzed. Anytime there are explosive impacts on the body, and especially the head, the entire RWH crew cringes enough to spill our drinks. Which is saying something.

Finn Power Surge

Lest we give the impression that Pav is the only Wing who is cranking up his offensive production, consider the case of Valtteri Filppula. His last five games, Fil has scored four goals with one assist, contributing to a season stat line of 7G-12A-19P, good for 33rd place in the league. He is also clocking a +8, his best since the Wings were last in the Cup Final.

Today against Nashville, he had a pretty spin-around top shelf backhand of a Bertuzzi shot int he first period...

...and added another goal in the second on a tip, by virtue of being the first Wing to drive to the front of the net.

It sure looks like the move to the wing has allowed Fil to simplify his game and contribute more efficiently.

Pav Impresses Against the Bs

He recently described his own early season play as "awful", but Pavel Datysuk has apparently decided to eject a large creature from his back by scoring eight points in the last four games leading up to today's tilt with Nashville. His nationally-televised effort yesterday against the Bruins was consummate Pav, as he scored a goal in regulation to give the team the lead, and after that lead was relinquished, he led off the Wings' slate of skaters with a tally in the shootout.

We were scouring the interwebs for pictures of Ian White's fractured cheekbone and the collateral damage to the rest of his face, using the search term "ian white's face", and inexplicably, on the third page of image results, the accidental smut started.

We're sure they're very nice girls and all. There were a bunch of skanky photos (all from one website) cropping up throughout our innocent hockey search, and all of a sudden it occurred to us that the Wings are headed to California, a series of non-traditional hockey markets to be sure, but the natural habitat for several indigenous species of trollop.

So, let's take a look at the crews for the Sharks, Kings and Ducks:

San Jose Sharks
...do not have an ice crew! Though there is a FB page attempting to rectify that perceived over sight right here.

Los Angeles Kings
It goes without saying that Los Angeles, the blazing silicon sun at the whirling center of a plastic constellation, has an ice crew. Here is their video for their annual calendar shoot:

It seems shocking that nearly all of these ice crew members sport at least one major physical flaw (horse face, bony chest, etc. ) since they are drawn from the world's most consistently refreshed and recycled reservoir of corporeal superficiality. But leave it to the Kings to start with almost infinite talent and emerge with banal mediocrity.

Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks call their ice crew the Power Players. Whaddya know, the Power Players also have a video for their calendar shoot this year:

The Ducks seems to have had more success with their crew than the Kings. It looks as if the Ducks strategy was to comb the strip mall parking lots of Orange County for fresh jailbaity talent, whereas the the Kings settled on Hollywood retreads. We'd like to give the edge to the Ducks, but in the post-PSU world, their squad seems unnervingly like a weird math teacher's wet dream than a legitimate ice cleaning detachment.

While we're on the topic, we are torn on whether or not the Wings should ever field an ice crew. One the one hand, the way this franchise conducts its business, an ice crew would seem like an awfully tawdry departure from the regular state of affairs. One the other, we would pay significant dollars to be a fly on the wall at those tryouts, as would bring the East Side pride and Downriver's finest out in droves. There would be catfights and Soprano's-style malapropisms before those ladies even signed their waivers. It would be fantastic.

Griffins Offensive Stat Shot

Took a quick look at the Griffins' offensive leaders today, and we were surprised to learn that Chris Connor has ripped off a line of 6G-13A-19P in 14 GP. Nyquist is also clipping along at a point per game with 4-10-14 in 14. Not bad a bargain basement free agent addition and a fourth-rounder.

On the flip side, Tomas Tatar seems off to a slow start, clocking a 3-3-6 in 14 GP thus far. Maybe Nyquist has consumed some of his ice time?

Homeless Mike Richards

I was cooking at the women's overnight shelter in Uptown last night, and there was a woman wearing a #18 Mike Richards Flyers jersey. It was pro-grade, stitched name and number, captain's C, etc. I guess they don't sell as well as they used to. I would have taken a photo, but it would have been a massive violation of client confidentiality.

Alex always makes the rest of us feel like self-absorbed tools because he's always cooking food for hungry people and walking 5Ks and actually raising money for Movember instead of just growing a 'stache and skimming cachet. And now he couldn't even take a picture of a homeless woman in a Flyers jersey because his stupid ethics got in the way. What a jerk.

After Ian White blocked a sure game-tying goal with his face against Dallas the other night, it was announced that Brenden Smith had been recalled from Grand Rapids. He still needs to sit the final game of his 5-game NHL suspension. Expect to see Mike Commodore step into the line-up in the interim. White is expected to miss the upcoming four-game road trip in its entirety.

Todd Bertuzzi is also on the mend from the sinus infection and minor inner ear-related equilibrium issues, so he's been placed on short-term injured reserve. The Wings might bring in Fabian Brunnstrom for some skill, or move someone like Abdelkader into that spot.

Also, we'd really like to see a photo of White's face. We found his desperate actions inspiring.

Nick Oslund, in his first year of pro hockey following four years at St. Cloud State, got in his first pro scrap a couple of weeks ago down in Toledo. Oslund isn't projected for the big leagues anytime soon, but at 6-foot-3, 210 lbs., if he's going to make it, he'll make it playing a physical game. Might as well get some tilts under his belt.

The Grand Rapids Griffins are currently second in the AHL in fighting majors with seventeen, second only to the nineteen logged by the Lake Erie Monsters. The Griffins put up four fighting majors in one night, on October 28 against the Abbotsford Heat. After Greg Amadio opened the fight card in the first, the Heat Crashed the crease in the second, sparking a three-fight melee featuring Brendan Smith, Garnet Exelby, and Joey MacDonald. Yes, goalie-on-goalie action.

Of course, we would be remiss if we talked about the Griffins and fisticuffs without checking in with burgeoning Griffins fan favorite Mitch Callahan, who got in a spirited tilt with Ben Wilson of the aforementioned Lake Erie Monsters on Nov. 2.

We'd give a marginal edge to Callahan in that fight, though he certainly took some shots.

Ericsson Dominates Dorsett

Friday night at The Joe got a little bit rowdy as Jonathan Ericsson decided to punch Derek Dorsett a couple dozen times and generally dominate their scrap.

Here's the video:

Dorsett followed through high and with the stick when he came out to challenge Ericsson at the point and Ericsson responded in kind. Big E then waited until Dorsett was in contention for the puck and delivered another shot. They went back and forth with the cross checks until the gloves came off.

Nice to see Ericsson playing this role for the first time this season.

Realignment Rumors

Reader Dave K wrote in from his new home in (gag) Vancouver, gauging the RWH camp's feelings on divisional/conference realignment and its consequences for the Wings.

Mostly, our feeling is that there will be no satisfactory solution, unless we can get a team from the East to relocate to Vegas, allowing the Wings and BJs to slide east, while the Jets 2.0 and this mythical Vegas team take up spots in the West. Beyond that, it is a series of less desirous compromises.

In the end, we'll enjoy watching the Wings play all 82 games. If they play the Rangers, B's, Habs, and Leafs a bunch, we'll relish those Original Six match-ups. If they continue to cultivate conference rivalries against the California teams, we'll be watching those as well. Beating up on Great Lakes state rivals like Chicago and Columbus will never get old, and teaching southern folks how the game should really be played is always fun to watch.

As long as they're playing Red Wings hockey, we'll be watching Red Wings hockey.

One of the RWH affiliates sent the photo below into HQ under the subject "Why Finland is the Awesomest."

And we thought Tex-Mex in the executive suites at The Joe was opulent! If we could drink beer, naked, while scrunched up on the edge of our ass-sweat-drenched bench in nervous excitement ...now that would be a game day experience we wouldn't soon forget.

(What? There are other naked dudes, too? Get a beer and relax, Ricktard. Pour some more water on the hot rocks while you're up. If you can find some pickled herring and rye bread and a bottle of aquavit, that would great.)

If this is anything, it is proof that the Upper Peninsula is just not Finnish enough, because we have been all over the UP and we have never seen anything like this in Escanaba or Houghton or Marquette.

Well, needless to say, to the game day experience at RWH HQ will not be so glorious, but we did purchase the NHL Center Ice package today, so we will be watching whatever games we can, probably in the company of regrettably clothed companions and in the absence of rejuvenating steam. But we're so excited for the return of Wings hockey maybe we'll just get naked and improvise.

Tex-Mex options in the executive suites. These should trickle down to the concourse pretty quickly, as nothing soaks up a steady stream of 22 oz. beers like a big-ass burrito. Mexicantown, make your presence known!
The new Volunteer Energy Red Patrol. This squad will probably be firing t-shirt guns into the crowd, and there is nothing quite so American as free shit. And we have to believe that the Red Patrol will feature some of Downriver's and the East Side's finest eye candy.

Fine on the Farm

The talk of the town in the last two pre-season games was Gustav Nyquist, and for good reason. You don't often see guys walk off the boards like he did against the Hawks, and chipping a rebound and burying a quick wrister versus the Pens certainly ramped up speculation that he'll be banging down the door of the Wings top six in no time. But we're patient cats here at RWH, and we're fine with Gus spending some time down in GR.

We were also excited to see Tomas Tatar bang this one in with no doubt against the Leafs.

Tatar is now listed at 186 lbs. which is about 15 heavier than his first season in GR, if memory serves. He'll probably be sniffing the top six sooner rather than later as well, especially if he can continue to build strength. But, again, GR is where he should be this year.

The length of the suspension seems appropriate and legit and Shanny's position seems both justified and reasonable. It definitely sounds as though he's getting awfully aggravated with making these videos, though.
